How I Found Buteyko

Jan enrolled in a Buteyko course to accompany her daughter who had begun to use a C-pap Machine for her sleep apnea. They were looking for a natural method that would enable her daughter to sleep soundly, with good rest, without the machine.

Jan is a certified practitioner of Aston Patterning and she thought the Buteyko class might be useful in understanding issues about hyperventilation in her bodywork clients. Within 2 weeks of the class, Jan became very aware of her own problem of anxiety. She began to notice that her anxiety expressed itself most prominently when she was worried and automatically opened her mouth to breathe. She also noticed at the same time that her chest and neck and mouth tightened, mostly when she was worried or late to an appointment, wishing she could run instead of walk.

Jan’s observations of her own anxiety were important in moving along her interest in the Buteyko Breathing Method and during the next year she repeated the Buteyko training. Her motivation for her own health problems/anxieties motivated her to really begin to use the breathing exercises. She began to include them in her schedule on a daily basis, increasing the breathing practice until she began to experience improvement. As she increased the exercises, she was able to quickly identify the need for more oxygen and instead of breathing through her mouth to try to get oxygen, she kept her mouth closed, breathed with awareness and brought relaxation to both her body and mind.

Jan traveled to Calgary in Canada in 2008 where she took the advanced Buteyko Training with Christine Bauman. She is a member of Buteyko Breathing Educators of America.

Jan teaches the Buteyko Breathing Method at her office in west Los Angeles.
